Symbolism

As a French overseas department and region, Martinique officially uses the French tricolor. The local 'snake flag' (four serpents on blue) appears on some regional emblems and recalls a 1766 decree by Governor François de Clieu, though the French national flag remains the official state banner.

History

Martinique has flown the French tricolor since the island became a French possession. A distinctive snake flag circulated from the 18th century but was never officially adopted; the tricolor was reaffirmed when Martinique became a department in 1946.
