Symbolism

As a French overseas collectivity, Saint Pierre and Miquelon officially uses the French tricolor. The unofficial local flag bears three squares recalling the Basque, Breton, and Norman settlers, with a yellow ship representing the Basque fishing vessel Grande Hermine and the islands' maritime history.

History

Saint Pierre and Miquelon has used the French tricolor since remaining French after the 1763 Treaty of Paris. A distinctive local flag with regional emblems was designed in 1982 for cultural use but was never officially adopted as a state flag.
