Flag of Dominica
Symbolism
The green field represents the lush vegetation of the island. The cross represents the Trinity and the Christian faith. The yellow represents the sun and the original Carib and Arawak people. The black represents the fertile soil and African heritage. The white represents the clear water and purity. The Sisserou Parrot is the national bird and a symbol of uniqueness.
History
Adopted on November 3, 1978. Designed by Alwin Bully. The design has been slightly modified three times (1981, 1988, 1990), mainly updating the parrot's appearance.
Construction
A 1:2 ratio. A green field with a centered cross of three bands (yellow, black, white). A red disc in the center contains a Sisserou Parrot circled by ten green stars.
