Blue and red were taken from the French tricolor (removing the white to symbolize the removal of colonial influence). The coat of arms features a palm tree topped by a Phrygian cap (liberty), surrounded by cannons, rifles, and flags, with the motto: 'L'Union Fait La Force' (Unity is Strength).
History
Adopted on February 25, 1986. The design was originally created in 1803 during the Haitian Revolution.
