Symbolism

The blue field represents the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The black and white isosceles triangles represent the harmony between the black and white races. The yellow triangle represents the sun and prosperity. The shape of the triangles represents the Pitons, the island's famous twin volcanic peaks.

History

Adopted on March 1, 1967, in the lead-up to Saint Lucia's associated statehood with Britain. Dunstan St. Omer designed the nested triangles to evoke the Pitons peaks and racial harmony; the flag remained unchanged when the island became fully independent in 1979.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio. A blue field with three nested triangles (white, black, and yellow) in the center.

Color Meanings

blue: Fidelity and the sea surrounding the nation
yellow: Sunshine, prosperity, and the golden beaches
black: The island's volcanic heritage and the people
white: Peace and racial harmony
