Symbolism

Green represents agricultural wealth and hope. Red represents the courage of the people and the blood shed in conflicts. The hammer and sickle reflect Soviet-era heritage and the continued use of socialist symbolism by the breakaway republic. The eight-pointed star above represents the Moldavian SSR and continuity with Soviet heraldry.

History

The current flag was adopted on September 24, 2000, replacing the earlier SSR-style flag that had been used since Transnistria declared independence in 1990. The territory's status remains unresolved in Moldovan and international law.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio horizontal bicolor of red over green with a gold hammer-and-sickle and star emblem at the hoist.

Color Meanings

green: Agricultural wealth and the Dniester region
red: Courage and revolutionary tradition
