Symbolism

The Blue Ensign reflects Montserrat's status as a British Overseas Territory. The coat of arms depicts Erin (Ireland) with a harp, recalling the Irish heritage of many settlers, and a woman holding a cross, representing the 1995 volcanic crisis and resilience of the Montserratian people.

History

Montserrat's coat of arms was granted in 1909, and the Blue Ensign bearing those arms was officially adopted as the territory flag. The design was updated in symbolism after the Soufrière Hills volcano eruptions beginning in 1995.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio British Blue Ensign with the Montserrat coat of arms in the fly.
