Symbolism
White represents peace and prosperity, green represents the Green Mountain (Jebel Akhdar) and fertility, and red represent battles against invaders. The national emblem (Khanjar) features a traditional dagger and two crossed swords.
History
Adopted on December 17, 1970, when Sultan Qaboos bin Said replaced the plain red flag of the previous sultanate. The white, red, and green horizontal bands with the vertical red stripe and khanjar emblem were standardized by royal decree in 1995, giving Oman its current distinctive national banner.
Construction
A 1:2 ratio. Three equal horizontal bands of white, red, and green with a vertical red band at the hoist containing the national emblem in white.
