Symbolism
Red represents the Han Chinese people and the land. Blue represents nationalism and liberty. White represents equality and democracy. The twelve rays of the white sun represent the twelve months and twelve traditional Chinese hours, symbolizing progress throughout the year.
History
The flag was officially adopted as the national flag of the Republic of China on December 17, 1928, on the mainland. It continued in use in Taiwan after 1949, where the Republic of China government relocated following the Chinese Civil War.
