Symbolism

Blue represents the sky and sea, gold represents the golden sands and the sunshine, and green represents the lush vegetation. The three green diamonds (the 'Gems of the Antilles') are arranged in a 'V' shape for Saint Vincent.

History

Adopted on October 21, 1985, replacing an earlier flag with a breadfruit leaf that had been used since independence in 1979. Julien van der Wal's design was chosen to give Saint Vincent and the Grenadines a simpler, more distinctive banner centered on the Gems of the Antilles.

Construction

A 2:3 ratio. A vertical tricolor of blue, gold (double width), and green, with three green diamonds centered in the gold band.

Color Meanings

blue: The sky and the sea surrounding the islands
gold: Golden sands, sunshine, and the people
green: Lush vegetation and agriculture
