BI · 3:5

Symbolism

The three stars represent the three main ethnic groups of Burundi (Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa) and the national motto: 'Unitẻ, Travail, Progrès' (Unity, Work, Progress). White represents peace, green represents hope, and red represents the independence struggle.

History

Adopted on June 28, 1967. The center originally featured a drum (karyenda) and a sorghum plant, but these were removed when the monarchy was abolished.

Construction

A 3:5 ratio. A white saltire divides the flag into four triangles: green (hoist and fly) and red (top and bottom). A white disc in the center contains three red stars with green borders.
