Symbolism

The light blue background represents the Pacific Ocean. The Union Jack reflects links to the UK. The shield features agricultural products: a lion holding a cocoa pod, sugar cane, a coconut palm, a dove of peace, and bananas.

History

Adopted on October 10, 1970, the day of independence. The flag was modified from the colonial blue ensign by changing the background to light blue and removing the crest and supporters from the coat of arms.

Construction

A light blue ensign in a 1:2 ratio. The Union Jack is in the canton, and the national shield is centered on the fly half.

Color Meanings

light-blue: The Pacific Ocean and the clear skies of Fiji
white: Purity and peace (represented by the dove)
red: Courage (represented by the lion)
green: Agricultural wealth (bananas, sugar cane, and coconut palm)
