Flag of Abkhazia
Symbolism
Green and white stripes represent life and spiritual purity in Abkhaz national symbolism. The open hand with seven stars in a semicircle represents the seven historical regions of Abkhazia and a greeting of peace. The stars above the hand denote the seven stars of the Big Dipper, important in Abkhaz tradition.
History
The flag was adopted by the Supreme Soviet of Abkhazia on July 23, 1992, during the war with Georgia. Abkhazia declared independence in 1999; its statehood is recognized by a limited number of countries and remains disputed internationally.
Construction
A 1:2 ratio. Seven horizontal green and white stripes with a red canton containing a white open hand and seven white stars in an arc.
