Symbolism

Green represents the land and prosperity under Chinese sovereignty. White represents the purity of the Macanese people. The white lotus flower symbolizes Macau's harmony and its location at the Pearl River estuary. The five stars echo the flag of the People's Republic of China.

History

The flag was approved by the National People's Congress on March 31, 1993, and first raised at midnight on December 20, 1999, when Portugal transferred sovereignty of Macau to China under the principle of 'one country, two systems'.
