Symbolism

The crimson red is the national color of Nepal (and the rhododendron). The blue border represents peace and harmony. The moon (top) represents the serenity of the people and the sun (bottom) represents their fierce resolve.

History

The only non-quadrilateral national flag in the world. It was officially adopted on December 16, 1962, though the basic design had been used for centuries.

Construction

A 1.219:1 ratio. Two stacked triangles (pennons) with a blue border. The sun and moon emblems were updated in 1962 to remove the human facial features.
