Symbolism

Red is a traditional color of the Ottoman Empire. The crescent and star are enduring symbols of Islam and are thought to bring good luck.

History

First adopted in 1831, it is one of the oldest national flags still in use. It was retained throughout the French protectorate and formally recognized upon independence in 1956.
