Symbolism

Green represents Islam, and white represents purity. The red crescent and star are traditional symbols of Islam. Red also stands for the blood of those killed fighting for independence in the Algerian War.

History

Adopted on July 3, 1962, following independence from France. The design is based on the flag of the National Liberation Front (FLN), which led the independence movement against colonial rule.

Construction

A 2:3 ratio. A vertical bicolour of green and white with a red crescent and five-pointed star centered on the dividing line.
