Symbolism

Red is a traditional color of the Ottoman Empire, from which Tunisia was once a part. The crescent and star are enduring symbols of Islam and are also thought to bring good luck.

History

Adopted in 1831 by Bey Hassan I, making it one of the oldest national flags in the world. It was retained when Tunisia became a French protectorate and upon full independence in 1956.

Construction

A 2:3 ratio. A red field with a white disc in the center containing a red crescent and a red five-pointed star.
