Which flag is Ecuador?
The Third Side of Gran Colombia
Ecuador kept Francisco de Miranda's uneven yellow when Gran Colombia split. The tricolor was adopted on September 26, 1860, at 2:3, with yellow twice as tall as blue or red. The coat of arms, including the Andean condor, was added in 1900 so the flag would not match Colombia's plain tricolor. Colombia versus Ecuador already has a page.
Venezuela equalized the three bands and put white stars on the blue stripe for the provinces that backed independence. The eighth star, for Guayana, was added on March 12, 2006. Proportion is 2:3. Colombia versus Venezuela is the other published page: double yellow and no stars against equal stripes and the star arc.
Measure the yellow, then look for stars. Half the flag in yellow, plus arms, is Ecuador. Equal thirds and eight stars are Venezuela. Plain double yellow with no arms is Colombia.
Telling them apart
- Ecuador yellow is half the flag. Venezuela yellow is one third.
- Ecuador's tell besides the ratio is the condor arms. Venezuela's tell is the eight-star arc.
- All three Gran Colombia flags in this set are 2:3.
