Red represents the blood shed during the struggle for independence. Black represents the African continent. The central emblem features a half-gear (representing workers and industry), a machete (representing peasants and agricultural struggle), and a star (representing internationalism and progress).
History
Adopted on November 11, 1975, when Angola gained independence from Portugal. The design was inspired by the flag of the MPLA (People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola).
