Symbolism

The blue represents the sea and sky. The 10 stars represent the 10 main islands. The circle of stars represents the unity of the nation. Red and white represent the road to progress.

History

Adopted on September 22, 1992. It replaced the previous flag (which shared colors with Guinea-Bissau) to mark a transition to multi-party democracy.

Construction

A 2:3 ratio. A blue field with three horizontal bands of white, red, and white in the lower half. A circle of 10 yellow stars is centered on the red band, slightly toward the hoist.
