Symbolism

Red represents the blood of those who died for independence, yellow stands for the mineral wealth of the country, and green symbolizes the rich forests and agriculture. The black star represents African emancipation and the Black Star Line.

History

Designed by Theodosia Okoh and adopted upon independence in 1957. Ghana was the first sub-Saharan African country to adopt the Pan-African colors, inspired by Ethiopia's resistance to colonialism.

Construction

A 2:3 ratio. A horizontal tricolor of red, yellow, and green with a black five-pointed star centered in the yellow band.
