Symbolism

The flag of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands follows the Australian territory tradition: a green field represents the lush coconut palm groves that define the atoll economy, with a gold palm centered and a gold southern cross in the canton linking the islands to Australia.

History

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands flag was officially adopted on April 6, 2004, following a local design competition. It was introduced after the territory's governance was transferred from the Ross Hill administration to the Australian Government.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio green field with a gold coconut palm in the center and a gold southern cross of five stars in the canton.

Color Meanings

green: The coconut palms and vegetation of the atolls
gold: The southern cross and the tropical sun
white: The stars of the southern cross
