Symbolism

Dark blue represents the Indian Ocean surrounding the island. Green represents the phosphate mining heritage and the regrowth of vegetation. The gold disk represents the island's mining history. The southern cross links Christmas Island to Australia and the southern hemisphere.

History

The Christmas Island flag was officially adopted on January 26, 2002, following a territory-wide design competition. It replaced informal ensigns used during decades of phosphate mining under Australian administration.

A 1:2 ratio. Blue field with the Union Jack and southern cross in the canton, a gold disk at center, and a green triangle at the fly.
