Symbolism

The Blue Ensign reflects the Falkland Islands' status as a British Overseas Territory. The coat of arms features a ram symbolizing the sheep farming that has dominated the economy since the 19th century, above a sailing ship representing early exploration and settlement.

History

The current Blue Ensign bearing the Falkland Islands coat of arms was granted in 1948 and has remained the territory's primary flag. It replaced earlier unofficial designs used after British reassertion of control in 1833.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio British Blue Ensign with the Falkland Islands coat of arms (ram above a ship) in the fly.
