Red represents the sun and the savanna, blue represents the Gambia River (which flows through the center), and green represents the land and forests. The white stripes represent peace and unity.
History
Adopted on February 18, 1965, the day of independence. Designed by Louis Thomasi, it was chosen to reflect the country's unique geographical reliance on the Gambia River.
