Symbolism

Red represents the sun and the savanna, blue represents the Gambia River (which flows through the center of the country), and green represents the land and forests. The white stripes represent peace and purity.

History

Adopted on February 18, 1965, the day of independence. Designed by Louis Thomasi, it was chosen to represent the country's geography.

Construction

A 2:3 ratio. A horizontal tricolor of red, blue, and green separated by narrow white stripes.
