Symbolism

The flag follows the design of the Great Seal of Guam: a almond-shaped emblem (Chamorro slingstone) bordered in red, depicting a proa sailing in Agana Bay near Hagåtña cliff, with 'GUAM' inscribed in red. The blue field represents the surrounding Pacific Ocean and loyalty to the United States.

History

Adopted on February 9, 1948, by the Guam Congress. The design was based on the territorial seal approved earlier and has served as Guam's official flag throughout its status as an unincorporated U.S. territory.

Construction

A 22:41 ratio dark blue field with the circular Guam coat of arms centered, bearing a proa, cliff, and the word GUAM.

Color Meanings

blue: The Pacific Ocean and loyalty
red: Courage and the border of the seal
brown: The Chamorro people and the slingstone emblem
