Symbolism

The two blue vertical bands represent the two oceans (Pacific and Atlantic) that border the country. The white band represents peace and purity. The coat of arms features the Quetzal (national bird), two crossed rifles (willingness to defend), and two crossed swords (honor).

History

Adopted on August 17, 1871. The design was a return to the original blue and white colors used by the United Provinces of Central America.

A 5:8 ratio. A vertical tricolor of sky blue, white, and sky blue, with the national coat of arms centered in the white band.
