Symbolism

Red represents the blood of those who died for independence, yellow represents the sun and mineral wealth, and green represents hope and agriculture. The black star represents Africa and its people.

History

Adopted in 1973 after independence was declared from Portugal. The design is based on the flag of the PAIGC (African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde).

Construction

A 1:2 ratio. A vertical red band on the hoist with a black star, and two horizontal bands of yellow and green on the fly.
