The blue stripes are designed to resemble the stripes on a tallit, the traditional Jewish prayer shawl. The Star of David (Magen David) is a universally recognized symbol of Judaism.
History
Designed for the Zionist Movement in 1891, well before the establishment of the State of Israel. It was officially adopted as the national flag on October 28, 1948.
