Symbolism

The sky blue background represents endless sky and water, as well as the Turkic peoples. The sun has 32 rays shaped like grain, representing abundance. The soaring steppe eagle symbolizes freedom and the lofty ideals of the Kazakh people. The hoist ornament is a traditional 'koshkar-muiz' (ram's horn) pattern.

History

Adopted on June 4, 1992, replacing the flag of the Kazakh SSR after independence from the Soviet Union. Designed by Shaken Niyazbekov.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio. A light blue field with a gold sun and eagle in the center and a vertical gold ornamental pattern along the hoist.
