Symbolism

Green represents the Norfolk Island pine, the territory's iconic tree and symbol. White represents the purity of the island community. The Norfolk Island pine tree in the center is the defining emblem of the island, which was settled by descendants of the Bounty mutineers.

History

The flag was approved by the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly and officially adopted on January 17, 1980. It gave the self-governing territory a distinct symbol before governance reforms integrated the island more closely with Australia in 2015.
