Symbolism
Blue represents the Conservative Party and red represents the Liberal Party. White represents peace between them. The blue star represents honesty and purity, and the red star represents authority and law.
History
Adopted on December 20, 1903, shortly after Panama declared independence from Colombia. María de la Ossa de Amador secretly sewed the first flags from her family home; the design's stars and quarters represent the country's political parties united under a banner modeled loosely on the United States flag.
Construction
A 2:3 ratio. Divided into four rectangles: white with a blue star (top hoist), red (top fly), blue (bottom hoist), and white with a red star (bottom fly).
