Symbolism

The Blue Ensign reflects Pitcairn's status as a British Overseas Territory. The coat of arms features a green shield with an anchor and Bible, representing the Bounty mutineers' settlement and their Christian faith, topped by a helmet and topped with a Pitcairn Island wheelbarrow.

History

Pitcairn's coat of arms was granted in 1969, and the Blue Ensign bearing those arms was approved as the territory flag. It commemorates the settlement of the island by Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian companions in 1790.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio British Blue Ensign with the Pitcairn Islands coat of arms in the fly.
