Green is the traditional color of Islam and the Turkic peoples. The five carpet 'guls' (patterns) represent the five traditional tribes of Turkmenistan. The crescent and five stars represent Islam and the five provinces of the country.
History
Adopted on February 19, 1992. The design was slightly modified in 2001 to include an olive branch, symbolizing the country's UN-recognized status of permanent neutrality.
Construction
A 2:3 ratio. A green field with a vertical red band at the hoist containing five guls and an olive wreath. A white crescent and five stars are in the upper canton.
