Symbolism

The blue represents the sea and sky. The 10 stars represent the 10 main islands of the archipelago. The circle of stars represents the unity of the nation. Red and white represent the road to progress.

History

Adopted on September 22, 1992. It replaced the previous flag, which shared colors with Guinea-Bissau, to mark a transition to a multi-party democratic system.

Construction

A 2:3 ratio. A blue field with three horizontal bands of white, red, and white. A circle of 10 yellow stars is positioned toward the hoist.
