Flag of Western Sahara
Symbolism
Green represents progress and the fertile oases of the Western Sahara. White represents peace and the purity of the independence struggle. Black represents the difficult years of conflict. The red star and crescent represent Islam and the blood shed for liberation in the Sahrawi national narrative.
History
The flag was adopted by the Polisario Front on February 27, 1976, when the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic was proclaimed. The United Nations classifies Western Sahara as a non-self-governing territory whose final status remains unresolved.
Construction
A 2:3 ratio. Horizontal stripes of black, white, and green with a red triangle at the hoist containing a red star and crescent.
