Symbolism

Blue represents the sky, the sea, and loyalty. Black symbolizes the soil of the homeland and the dark past of suffering. White stands for purity, hard work, and the quest for enlightenment.

History

First adopted as a student association flag in 1881. It became the national flag in 1918, was banned during the Soviet occupation, and was re-adopted on August 7, 1990.
