Symbolism

The colors are derived from the coat of arms of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg (a red lion on a field of white and blue stripes). The light blue distinguishes it from the flag of the Netherlands.

History

The tricolor was first used during the Belgian Revolution in 1830. It was officially adopted as the national flag on June 23, 1972.
