Symbolism

Red represents justice, white represents peace, and blue represents liberty. The flag is unique for having different emblems on the obverse and reverse: the national coat of arms on the front and the Treasury Seal on the back.

History

Adopted on November 25, 1842, under President Carlos Antonio López. The tricolor layout drew on the French flag, while the 2013 law confirming different obverse and reverse emblems preserved Paraguay's unique tradition of displaying the national coat of arms on one side and the Treasury seal on the other.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio. A horizontal tricolor of red, white, and blue, with the national emblem centered in the white band.

Color Meanings

red: Justice and the blood of patriots
white: Peace, unity, and purity
blue: Liberty, benevolence, and truth
