Symbolism

The red field with gold borders represents the historical flag of Montenegro. The double-headed eagle is a Byzantine symbol adopted by the Crnojević dynasty, representing the union of church and state.

History

Adopted on July 13, 2004, shortly before independence from Serbia in 2006. The design is based on the royal standard of King Nikola I.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio. A red field bordered by a narrow golden-yellow stripe with the Montenegrin coat of arms centered.
