Symbolism

Blue represents the sky and the aspirations of the Kosovar people. The gold map outline represents Kosovo's territory. The six white stars represent the six main ethnic communities of Kosovo, symbolizing inclusion and equal representation in the new state.

History

The flag was adopted by the Assembly of Kosovo on June 12, 2008, shortly after the declaration of independence on February 17, 2008. A competition selected a design avoiding ethnic symbols to represent all communities in the partially recognized state.

Construction

A 2:3 ratio blue field with a gold silhouette map of Kosovo centered, surmounted by an arc of six white five-pointed stars.

Color Meanings

blue: The sky, peace, and European aspirations
