Symbolism

The design represents the 'new sun of Liberty' mentioned in the national anthem. The red and yellow colors have been traditionally associated with Macedonia.

History

Adopted on October 5, 1995. The previous flag featured the Vergina Sun, which caused a dispute with Greece (which claims the symbol as exclusively Greek). The current 'sunburst' design was a compromise.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio. A stylized yellow sun with eight broadening rays extending from the center to the edge of the red field.

Color Meanings

red: Freedom and the blood shed for independence
yellow: The new sun of liberty and radiant energy
