The blue background was inspired by the United Nations flag. The five-pointed star (Star of Unity) represents the five regions where Somali people lived.

History

Adopted on October 12, 1954. Designed by Mohammed Awale Liban, it was chosen to express gratitude to the UN for its assistance during the country's transition to independence.
