Symbolism

The blue background was inspired by the United Nations flag, acknowledging the UN's role in Somalia's transition to independence. The five-pointed star (Star of Unity) represents the five regions where Somali people lived: British Somaliland, Italian Somaliland, French Somaliland (Djibouti), the Ogaden (Ethiopia), and the Northern Frontier District (Kenya).

History

Adopted on October 12, 1954. Designed by Mohammed Awale Liban, it was used as the flag of the Trust Territory of Somaliland before full independence.

Construction

A 2:3 ratio. A light blue field with a large white five-pointed star centered.
