Symbolism

Green represents agriculture, yellow represents mineral wealth, red represents the blood shed during the liberation war, and black represents the native African people. The white triangle represents peace. The Great Zimbabwe Bird is the national emblem, and the red star behind it represents socialism.

History

Adopted on April 18, 1980, the day Zimbabwe gained independence from British rule. The design was inspired by the flag of the ZANU-PF party.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio. Seven equal horizontal stripes of green, yellow, red, black, red, yellow, and green. A white triangle at the hoist contains a red star and a yellow Zimbabwe Bird.
