Symbolism

Black represents the African people, red represents the blood shed for freedom, and green represents the land and agriculture. The blue triangle represents the Nile River, and the yellow star represents the Star of Bethlehem, symbolizing the unity of South Sudan.

History

Adopted on July 9, 2011, the day of independence. The design was originally used as the flag of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM).

Construction

A 1:2 ratio. A horizontal tricolor of black, red, and green separated by thin white stripes. A blue triangle at the hoist contains a yellow five-pointed star.
