Symbolism

Red represents the struggle for independence and the blood of martyrs, white represents peace and light, and black represents the country (Sudan means 'Land of the Blacks' in Arabic). The green triangle represents Islam and the prosperity of the land.

History

Adopted on May 20, 1970. It replaced the previous blue-yellow-green tricolor (used since 1956) to show solidarity with other Arab nations using the Pan-Arab colors.

Construction

A 1:2 ratio. A horizontal tricolor of red, white, and black with a green triangle at the hoist.
