Symbolism

The green originally represented the House of Braganza (Emperor Pedro I) and the yellow the House of Habsburg (Empress Maria Leopoldina). The blue circle shows the night sky over Rio de Janeiro on November 15, 1889 (the day the republic was declared), with each star representing a specific state. The motto 'Ordem e Progresso' means Order and Progress.

History

Adopted on November 19, 1889, replacing the imperial flag after the fall of the monarchy. The design maintained the imperial colors but replaced the coat of arms with the celestial globe.

Construction

A 7:10 ratio. A yellow rhombus is centered on a green field, enclosing a blue disc with 27 white stars and a curved white band bearing the national motto in green letters.
