Symbolism

Blue represents the sky and hope, yellow represents the sun and the desert, and red represents progress and sacrifice. The colors merge the French tricolor with Pan-African colors.

History

Adopted on November 6, 1959. It is almost identical to the flag of Romania, but the blue is slightly darker. This has led to minor diplomatic discussions but no formal change.
